Reading syringe units: U-100, U-50 and U-40
The marks measure liquid, not compound — which is why the same volume reads differently on two barrels.
A unit on a syringe is a volume, not an amount of compound. On a U-100 barrel one unit is 0.01 mL, so 100 units fill 1 mL; on U-50 one unit is 0.02 mL, and on U-40 it is 0.025 mL. The same volume therefore reads as a different number of units depending on which barrel you are holding.
A unit is a volume, not a quantity of compound
The word carries the confusion. A syringe unit says nothing about milligrams — it is simply a name for a small volume of liquid, printed at intervals along the barrel. On a U-100 syringe, one unit is 0.01 mL. Ten units is 0.1 mL. One hundred units is 1 mL.
This is why "how many units" can never be answered on its own. Twenty units of a weak solution and twenty units of a strong one are the same amount of liquid and very different amounts of compound. Units become meaningful only once the concentration of the vial is known.
What the U number means
The number after the U is the calibration: how many units the manufacturer has marked into one millilitre. U-100 divides a millilitre into 100 marks, U-50 into 50, U-40 into 40. A bigger U number means finer marks, not a bigger syringe.
Read the row for the barrel in your hand. Reading a volume off the wrong row is the single most common way this arithmetic fails, and nothing about the numbers themselves will warn you — 0.4 mL is a perfectly ordinary reading whether it lands on 40 marks or 16.

Capacity and calibration are two different numbers
Syringes are also sold by how much they hold — 0.3 mL, 0.5 mL, 1 mL, 3 mL — and shops routinely name them by the unit count that capacity works out to. A "30-unit" or "50-unit" syringe is usually a U-100 barrel of 0.3 mL or 0.5 mL capacity: the marks are spaced exactly as on any other U-100 barrel, there are simply fewer of them before the plunger runs out.
So "50 unit" describes the size of the tube and "U-50" describes the spacing of the marks, and they are not the same claim. Pinned asks for both separately for that reason: the calibration decides what number you read, the capacity decides whether the volume fits at all.

Turning a volume into units
Once you have a volume in millilitres, the conversion is a multiplication: volume in mL x units per mL = units. Going back the other way, divide.
Illustrative, with no compound attached: 0.4 mL on a U-100 barrel is 0.4 x 100 = 40 units. The identical 0.4 mL on a U-40 barrel is 0.4 x 40 = 16 units. Both syringes would be holding exactly the same liquid. Anyone repeating a unit count they read somewhere, without repeating the concentration and the barrel it came from, is passing on a number that does not survive the trip.
Reading between the marks
Printed marks are finite. Many 1 mL barrels are numbered every ten units and ruled every one or two, so a volume that lands between rulings has to be estimated by eye. That estimate is usually the least precise step in the whole chain — more so than any rounding in the arithmetic before it.
Two situations make it worse: a very small volume in a large barrel, where the reading occupies a sliver of the scale, and a volume close to the barrel's capacity, where there is no room left for error. Pinned flags both — it warns when a draw is at or over the selected syringe's capacity, and when the volume is so small the barrel cannot show it honestly.

- How many units is 1 mL?
- It depends on the calibration. On a U-100 syringe 1 mL is 100 units, on U-50 it is 50 units, and on U-40 it is 40 units. The volume is identical in all three cases; only the number of marks differs.
- What does U-100 actually mean?
- That the barrel is marked with 100 units per millilitre, making one unit 0.01 mL. It is a statement about the spacing of the printed marks, not about the strength of anything you put in the syringe.
- Is one unit the same on every syringe?
- No, and this is the trap. One unit is 0.01 mL on U-100, 0.02 mL on U-50 and 0.025 mL on U-40. A unit count copied from one barrel to another describes a different volume.
- Is a 50-unit syringe the same as a U-50 syringe?
- Usually not. A syringe sold as 50-unit is typically a U-100 barrel with 0.5 mL capacity — normal U-100 spacing, fewer marks. U-50 refers to the calibration itself, which is a different spacing entirely.
- How do I convert units back to millilitres?
- Divide the units by the units per mL of that barrel. Forty units on U-100 is 40 / 100 = 0.4 mL. The same 40 units on U-40 is 40 / 40 = 1 mL.
